Why a Christian Shouldn't Smoke Weed...
February 28, 2012
This might seem like a "Duh" question that doesn't need addressing to some Christians. However, this is a question I have been asked by a student in the youth group. The student wanted to talk to their friends at school who were getting high and claimed to be Christians and thought there was nothing wrong with that. So I wanted to share my answer on this blog, and hopefully it can help others to provide a logical argument against Christians that want to smoke weed.
As a Christian why shouldn't we smoke weed?
1) Because we belong to God "don't you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price (the death of his son Jesus). So you must honor God with your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
2) You become an addict... The effect of a stimulant or a depressant wears off with continued use. A person has to use more just to keep the same effect. They become hooked. (lots of times people say that won't happen to me. lots of them are wrong. all former addicts started out thinking that). When you are addicted to something, it is your master, you are it's slave. Christians are to only have one master, Jesus Christ.
3) We are to be a good example of Christ to the world. In the Bible Paul made a commitment to avoid eating food sacrificed to idols because he didn't want someone to stumble in their Christian walk due to his example. (see 1 Cor. 8:12-13) You can't be a good example of Christian and smoke weed. People won't see Christ in you if you smoke weed! It isn't the wise thing to do, and the Bible calls us to be wise (Be as shrewd as serpants and as innocent as doves Matt. 10:16). It produces laziness, and the Bible warns against being lazy (Proverbs 19:15; 2 Thess. 3:10-11). It is a waste of money, and the Bible tells us to be a good steward of the possessions we have. (Luke 16:1-8) Finally, it is against the law, and we are told as Christians to obey the laws of our land unless they go against God. (Romans 13:1-7; 1 Tim. 2:1-2; Titus 3:1; Acts 5:29). The law to not smoke marijuana definitely does not go against God's law, so we must obey it. Additionally most parents (all good parents) want what is good for their children and forbid them to smoke weed. As Christians we are supposed to honor and obey our parents, so we are to honor our parents and not smoke weed (Eph. 6:1-3).
Lots of reasons huh! additionally, there is no GOOD reason for a Christian to smoke weed.
